There are a few brief mentions of a wilderness on the west part of the Nephite lands south of the narrow neck. The southern end of the wilderness is in proximity of the south wilderness.
ALMA 1:70 [2:15]: And it came to pass that the Amlicites came upon the hill of Amnihu, which was east of the river Sidon, which ran by the land of Zarahemla, and there they began to make war with the Nephites.
ALMA 1:94 [2:36]: And they fled before the Nephites, towards the wilderness which was west and north, away beyond the borders of the land;
ALMA 1:95 [2:37]: And the Nephites did pursue them with their might, and did slay them; yea, they were met on every hand, and slain, and driven, until they were scattered on the west, and on the north, until they had reached the wilderness, which was called Hermounts;
- These verses detail a battle between the Amlicites and Nephites in the proximity of the river Sidon and a hill that is on the east side of the river Sidon. After defeating the Amlicites, the Amlicites were driven to the north and west into a wilderness which was called the Hermounts.
ALMA 13:68 [22:27]: And it came to pass that the king sent a proclamation throughout all the land, amongst all his people who were in all his land, who were in all the regions round about, which was bordering even to the sea, on the east, and on the west, and which was divided from the land of Zarahemla by a narrow strip of wilderness, Alma 13:69 [22:27] Which ran from the sea east, even to the sea west, and round about on the borders of the sea-shore, and the borders of the wilderness which was on the north, by the land of Zarahemla, through the borders of Manti, by the head of the river Sidon, running from the east towards the west; and thus were the Lamanites and the Nephites divided.
- The description of the narrow strip of wilderness (south wilderness) indicates that there is a wilderness that extends to the north of the south wilderness on the west part of the south wilderness.
Isthmus of Tehuantepec (Mexico) Model Assessment:
Near the location where there is a hill (hill Amnihu) on the east side of a north-flowing river (river Sidon) describes the Usumacinta River where there is a solitary large hill on the east side of the river. To the north and west of this location is a mountainous area. This wilderness on the west part of the land extends north from the south wilderness which is located south of the narrow neck.
